A previous post examined the large sums of money that were collected from Union military personnel in 1862 and 1863 for the relief of the poor in Ireland. Despite the horrors of the ongoing war, the potential crisis in Ireland saw Irish Relief Funds emerge across the war-stricken North. Thousands of men in uniform took the time to make a contribution to save the vulnerable across the Atlantic, despite the fact that they themselves faced a potentially imminent death. I have created a database of the names of 871 of these donors, and have attempted to explore their fate. What became of these good samaritans in the final years of the war?
The majority of the military donors handed over anything between $1 and $5 for the Relief of the Irish Poor, with officers generally contributing greater amounts. All would have been forgiven for concentrating on their own situation, rather than concerning themselves with the plight of those still in Ireland. The desire for units to have their contribution recorded in newspapers such as the Irish-American allows us to examine the profile of some of these men, and explore what became of them during the war. This is an undertaking not without limitations; for example further work is required to discover what became of those men of the 4th United State Infantry and the sailors of the USS Kennebec.
The men recorded here predominantly served in the Eastern Theater, with notable exceptions being units such as the 10th Ohio and the telegraph builders from the Army of the Cumberland. It also highlights the high numbers of Irish in non-Irish formations, such as the regulars of the 4th U.S. Infantry, although traditional Irish regiments such as the 63rd and 88th New York of the Irish Brigade are also present. The Fenians clearly played a major part in organising some of these fund raising efforts, particularly those that took place in 1862 (such as the collection among the 10th Ohio Infantry). Elsewhere the drive appears to have been taken up at Company level, and it may be the case that in such situations almost everyone was expected to contribute something. The fact that a number of non-Irish names are included among the contributors demonstrates that it was not only emigrants from Ireland who felt a need to help out those they perceived as less fortunate.
The table below looks at 871 of the donations made by serving military in 1862 and 1863. Together they made a contribution to the Irish poor well in excess of $2,500. Although far from a complete list of those who contributed, it does provide a snapshot of some of the men who put their hands in their pockets to help hungry people across the Atlantic.
By attempting to cross-reference each name with available unit rosters, it has been possible to uncover some further detail of the service of many of the men listed. At least 78 did not survive the war- some fell on battlefields such as Gettysburg and Petersburg, while others perished in prison camps like Andersonville. Given the difficulty of tracking information on units like the 4th United States Infantry, the mortality rate amongst the donors is certainly much higher. Of those who did survive, more than 120 were wounded at some point during the conflict. At least 62 of the men saw desertion as their only escape from the carnage. More than fifty of them experienced life in Rebel hands, having been captured at some point during the war.
The majority of the money was collected only a few short weeks before the Chancellorsville and Gettysburg Campaigns. It is likely that the funds had not even arrived in Ireland before those two great battles had wounded 39 of the men, caused 14 to become prisoners, left a further two missing, and ended the lives of 29. Of the 182 men of the 42nd New York Infantry (Tammany Regiment) who made contributions, at least 35 subsequently died during the war- 13 of them as a result of the Battle of Gettysburg.
Two of the donors would go on to receive the Medal of Honor. Second Lieutenant Edward M. Knox of the 15th Independent New York Light Artillery, who contributed $20 for the Irish poor, earned his award for his actions at Gettysburg on 2nd July 1863. Private Michael Madden of the 42nd New York, who had given $5, would receive his award in recognition of the gallantry he had displayed at Mason’s Island, Maryland, on 3rd September 1861.
The contributions made by these men undoubtedly made a difference in the efforts to assist the destitute in Ireland. Many of them ended up in early graves, victims of a fate that through financial aid they had sought to spare others. Today the contributions they made in 1862 and 1863 are virtually forgotten. These men deserve to have their names remembered, and to be recognised for the help they provided at a time of great need.

March 15, 2013 7:38 pmInteresting data. I have always considered the 42nd NY INF to be an Irish regiment even though it is seldom listed as such. It was known as the Tammany Regiment and was formed in the spring of 1861. It’s first test was at Balls Bluff — not a good experience.

March 17, 2013 11:38 amThanks Jim!
I am in agreement with you about the 42nd. They are quickly becoming one of the units I am most interested in. They say they were 50% Irish but from looking at the rosters I suspect it is much greater than that, and they had a very strong Fenian contingent. I think they are going to be featuring more and more on the site!
Kind Regards,
Damian.

March 17, 2013 11:42 amHi Donald,
They certainly did contribute- I found record of $128.50 they collected for the Relief Fund (see the previous post here: https://irishamericancivilwar.com/2012/11/24/irish-relief-fund-the-remarkable-contribution-of-union-soldiers-sailors-part-1/) – unfortunately I haven’t located a published list of the names of those in the regiment who contributed though. That’s not to say one doesn’t exist, I hope to find more!
Kind Regards,
Damian.

March 18, 2013 4:59 pmOne of the donors in the list, was my great grandfather William Hodgins who served in the 63rd NY. He was born in Liverpool England o/a 1834 He enlisted on August 21 1861 in New York City, He re-enlisted at Stevensburgh Virginia in 1863 and served until he was mustered out at Alexandria Virginia June 30 1865. He returned home to Brooklyn New York
He became Quartermaster of the Louis Hamilton Post 152 Grand Army of the Republic. He died February 18, 1900.

March 25, 2013 8:50 pmI had no idea that he had contributed to this cause. One of the eternal mysteries about my great grandfather, William Hodgins, is the fact that he was born in Liverpool England and not in Ireland. Unfortunately. I have not been able to trace his ancestry beyond his mother and father and I am unsure where they were born. No doubt, though he must have had a strong tie to the Irish in order to volunteer for the 63rd NY Irish Brigade, and to contribute a dollar (no small sum, back then) to the Irish cause. Many thanks for the list you compiled. It was a thrill to see his name on the list of contributors.

March 26, 2013 12:52 pmHi Bob,
It is something I have seen quite a bit with Irish regiments, where soldiers were born in England. In the majority of cases (based solely on inferring their heritage from their surname, which is not without pitfalls) they appear to be from Irish families who emigrated to England and from there went on to the US, which might explain William’s story. Liverpool has always had strong ties to Ireland, particularly Dublin and it would especially have been the case during this period. It would be interesting to find out more to see if that could be confirmed!
Kind Regards,
Damian.

September 2, 2013 7:29 pmHello Bob…I am completely new to researching my ancestry and all I know is that my paternal grandmother was related to the Hodgins family and in fact her family cut her own mother off for marrying a policeman…This possibly links with William Hammersley Hodgins..His father was a policeman as was he…. I know these searches take up an enormous amount of time…..and require maximum effort…but I am intrigued. There is a link with Liverpool, and Ireland…and my own grandmother who passed away when I was about 6 years old…in 1960..left her husband and went to New York on the Mauretania in 1907 with her young daughter (for what reason?) and then came back a few years later when the Pinkerton Detectives found her. I have vague memories of a link to someone who was a bishop and there was mention of the Pilkington Glass company but these stories were from my childhood. My grandmother subsequently had two other children by her husband when she was brought back to her home in Saltney(I think), Chester one of which was my father. I would love to be in touch with my distant relatives and look forward to your reply.

September 9, 2013 5:32 pmDear Joan,
I received your comment re William Hodgins, my great grandfather, but I am afraid I cannot establish a connection with your family. None of the information you provided is familiar to me. Did any of your relatives live in Brooklyn, NY? My great grandfather returned to Brooklyn after the Civil War, and is buried along with his wife and sons at Evergreens Cemetery. His daughter married my grandfather Frederick Mickert. They are buried also at Evergreens (but in a different location). To see more of the Hodgins gravesite go to:

March 25, 2013 1:59 pmHis Obit from the Brooklyn Eagle: (his brother Thomas, is mentioned he is my GG-grandfather)
Acting Brig-Gen Mallon (of the Third Brigade, Second division, Second corps, Army of the Potomac) Killed in action at Bristoe Station, Wednesday Oct 14, of Irish-American parentage and born in the City of Brooklyn, Sept 12, 1836. Having received a good commercial education , he was employed first about eleven years ago in the house of Wright, Gillet & Rawson and subsequently in the firm of Holcomb and Harvey, both in the wholesale commission business in this City. A few years antecedent to the outbreak of the rebellion, he commenced in the same line of business on his own account, and speedily, secured for himself an honorable position on the door of the old Corn Exchange, and of the new Produce Exchange. No one of the younger class of merchants was more widely known or more highly esteemed than Mr. Mallon. He was a most intelligent, energetic and upright business man, faithful in the performance of all his duties and scrupulously exact in all his mercantile transactions.
Having been a member of the Fourth Company (Capt. Roblet) Seventh regiment NYSNG, for many years prior to the present war, he cheerfully responded to what he regarded as the imperative call of his country and waiving all other considerations he4 went with his regiment as a private in the ranks, in April 1862 to Washington. On its return after its first months service-not anticipating any further participation of the regiment in the struggles and enthusiastically eager to do his share of patriotic duty to the republic -of whose history he had been a diligent student and in whose position among the nation he felt a robust pride-he joined as a First Lieutenant, the Fortieth New York Volunteer (Mozart) regiment then command by his brother in law Col J.J. Reilly
After the Army of the Potomac had been transferred to the Peninsula, last year Lieut. Mallon received the complimentary appointment of Aid from the late Gen. Kearny, add for some ticks acted in the capacity of Assistant Adjutant -General on the gallant Generals staff. Of this appointment which was specially designed as recognition of his intelligence and intrepidity- Lieut. Mallon was very justly proud coming as it did from so distinguished an officer of his on race as Maj. Gen Phillip Kearny. Soon after the death of Kearny Lieut Mallon was transferred by Gov. Morgan from the Mozart to the Txxmony (forty-second New York Volunteer) regiment and promoted to the rank of Major for gallantry and efficiency.
On the reorganization of the Army of the Potomac under Gen. Burnside, Maj. Mallon was detached from his regiment and assigned to the position of Acting Assistant Provost Marshal of Hookers Grand division. He subsequently detailed for the performance of the same duty in connections with the Second corps, then under Gen Couch.
On the death of the second Colonel of the Forty second, and on the direct and earnest recommendation of Gen Hooker (The in Command of the Army of the Potomac) as also of his immediate corps, division and brigade commanders, Maj. Mallon was raised to the Colonelcy of the regiment by Gov. Seymour against decidedly strong political pressure. In favor of another officer. Col. Mallon’s commission, moreover was dated St. Patrick’s Day 1863, a trivial circumstance in itself, but very agreeable to his feeling. He commanded his regiment in the battle of Gettysburg in July and during that terrible conflict was repeatedly under the immediate personal leadership of Maj. Gen. Meade, who has swung round from corps to corps, according to the necessities of each, the veteran fighting brigade which included Col. Mallon’s regiment. In subsequently conversing with the present writer about the glorious victory of July, Col. Mallon was most enthusiastic in this eulogy of the coolness, skill and valor of Gen. Meade, to whom he referred as an illustration of his high ideal of a most accomplished soldier.
On the retreat of Lee’s army to the south on the Potomac Col. Mallon was detached with orders to proceed to New York and secure a reinforcement of conscripts for his war worn regiment. He was in this vicinity in obedience to his instructions throughout the months of August and September. Some three weeks ago he once more haplessly for the last time bade farewell to his friends to rejoin his command in season as he himself expressed it “for the next night” It was his last fight. His death was caused by a gunshot wound in the stomach which unfortunately proved fatal in half an hour. He closed his brief career gloriously as became so noble a citizen-soldier. He had often spoken to the writer of the enviable death of his former chef, the lamented Kearny. He felt the full force of a favorite poet’s worlds
“Whether on the scaffold high,
Or in the battles van
The noblest place for man to die
Is where he dies for man”
As Kearny felt so “in the battles van,” and in the same glorious cause, fell the youthful and chivalrous Mallon. A braver soldier, a truer patriot a more perfect gentleman never drew the breast of life. He laves an aged mother and a young wife, with two small children, to bear the affliction of a most heart rendering bereavement.
Gen. Mallon was about five feet seven inches high, and of remarkable sinewy frame. His manly features were most expressive of the rare qualities of mind and soul, so which were traceable the causes which led to his rapid promotion from the position of a private soldier, to the leadership of one of the most efficient brigades in the service of the Republic.
In religion, Gen. Mallon like all his family was a Catholic, in political conviction he was a conservative republican; but he never had anything to do with any and no taste for practical politics.
His remains reached the residency of the family in Little Water street Brooklyn on Monday under the care of his brother Lieut Thomas Mallon, who was himself very seriously wounded in the battle of Gettysburg. His funeral which will take place early today (Wednesday) will be strictly private, in obedience to the frequently expressed whish of the fallen hero..

April 30, 2013 3:04 pmMy Great Grandfather was Jeremiah McCarthy. He was shot in the head, I believe during Picketts Charge. According to my Grandfather, he often told the story that he was found among the dead on battlefield by Russell H. Conwell, whom he had known before the battle. Conwell took him to get medical attention when he found that he was still alive and my Great Grandfather lived well into his 70s; he lived long enough to see Conwell become a famous orator and author and found Temple University in Philadelphia.

Many thanks for the comment. Just checking the rosters there, it records Jeremiah as follows: Aged 19 years. Enlisted June 17, 1861 at Boston, Massachusetts, to serve three years. Mustered in as Private, Company C, June 22, 1861. Transferred to Company H, June 28, 1861. Wounded in action, July 3, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Discharged for disability, December 6, 1863, at Philadelphia Pennsylvania. It is incredible what the real story adds to the picture of Jeremiah, what an amazing story of survival- many thanks for sharing it!
Kind Regards,
Damian.

My name is Jeremiah M. McCarthy. Jeremiah J. McCarthy, who was wounded during Pickett’s Charge, was also my great Grandfather. I am presently looking to find out where he is buried. I plan to have a headstone installed wherever he is on or about the 150th Anniversry of Pickett’s Charge. My plans also include Catholic Burial rites by a Priest and full military honors by an active duty military unit. If we are talking about the same man, please get back to me soon.
Thanks, Jeremiah McCarthy
PS Freddie McCarthy is my son.

May 7, 2013 10:41 amHi Jeremiah,
Apologies- the comment registered you as Fred for some reason! Were you named for your Great-Grandfather? It is the same man as far as I can make out, it would be great if you could locate his burial. I really like your idea of honouring him on the 150th of Pickett’s Charge, it would be an appropriate way to remember him- I hope it goes well!
Kind Regards,
Damian.
