Tile Films are in the final stages of work on their two part docudrama Fág an Bealach (Faugh a Ballagh/Clear The Way) which focuses on the Irish Brigade. Each programme is 52 minutes in length and has been prepared for TG4 and the Smithsonian Channel USA. Episode One looks at the Brigade at the Battle of Antietam in 1862, with a particular focus on the remains of one of the Irishmen discovered on the battlefield in 1988. Episode Two explores the Brigade’s actions at Fredericksburg and Gettysburg, and the fall off in Irish support for the war from late 1862 onwards. First person accounts are being used as much as possible to tell the story, and there are also contributions from leading historians and experts. Directed by Keith Farrell, Fág an Bealach stars Irish actor Don Wycherley as Brigadier-General Thomas Francis Meagher, and is presented by Irish-American actor Brian Mallon, who played Major-General Winfield Scott Hancock in the 1993 film Gettysburg and the 2003 prequel Gods and Generals. The broadcast date has yet to be confirmed. To read more about the docudrama see the Tile Films synopsis here and the Irish Film and Television Network update here.
