A veteran of the Union’s Irish Brigade was yesterday honoured in the town of Belton, South Carolina. Sergeant Thomas Callaghan had fought against the Confederacy during the Civil War, but following the conflict elected to move South to make his home amongst his former enemies. He worked as a carpenter and spent the remainder of his life there, being buried in Belton Cemetery following his death on 7th May 1914. Representatives of the Sons of Union Veterans and United Daughters of the Confederacy spoke at the event, which saw the unveiling of two memorial grave markers; one for Sergeant Callaghan and one for Private John Newton Willingham who fought for the South.
