My great, great, grandfather, Corporal Dennis Murphy, served in Co 1, 22 Indiana Infantry, from 1861 until 1865. He was from Heltonville, Indiana, (Heltonsville is the incorrectly listed domocile) I would like to find where in Ireland he came from. John Kirkman, 7938 Winchester Circle, Goleta, CA (805) 685-0369
Thank you.
Many thanks for the comment. Do you have any idea when Dennis might have emigrated to the U.S.? It is often tricky with a surname such as Murphy to pin down exactly when they came in, but if you have an idea of the year it can often help. In addition do you know who he may have traveled with? With the names of other family members it can also help narrow down the search, particularly on the Irish side. It is the unfortunate reality though that with the destruction of much of our records during the Irish Civil War these searches can often be unrewarding- but it is worth trying!
